Faro council’s plans to increase the number of tourist beds in the wider council area is at the public consultation phase. In an interview with Henrique Gomes, chief of staff of the council president of the municipality, Algarve Primeiro reports that a German company is seeking permission for a five star hotel in the Santa Barbara de Nexe area.The accommodation boost initiative by the council will bring areas into play that, hitherto were not designated for tourism projects.
“It is possible to build quality hotels in certain new areas, provided they meet strict criteria. The plan does not define a certain area, but opens up the field to those interested in submitting projects," said Gomes.
The council will hold developers to “some strict criteria,” regarding environment and building size but the game is afoot to review new projects submitted by those wishing to build hotels and small units outside the city itself. The plan is to authorise buildings with a total in excess of 1,000 new beds.

One company already has come forward with a project, Luxo Pitoresco Lda., which is based in Gorjões and is German owned.
The public consultation process ends on May 17th, after which the council plans formally to assess the German hotel project and any other that are submitted.
