Government gives 4 million euros to increase green energy efficiency in the Algarve

green energyThe government today announced a total of €101 million of EU funds had been tendered, of which €4 million is directed to the Algarve with the aim of increasing energy efficiency.

Of the total, €24.5 million has been put towards businesses, €32.5 million has been given to Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS), €19 million for regional council and €25 million for social housing buildings.

This funding is made available through the Portugal 2020 Regional Operational Programs and is distributed throughout mainland Portugal as follows: North - €25 million euros; Centre - €26 million euros; Lisbon - €33 million euros; Alentejo - €13 million euros; and Algarve - €4 million euros.

The investment in improving the Algarve’s energy efficiency is part of the National Energy and Climate Plan, which promotes the decarbonisation of the economy and the energy transition towards carbon neutrality in 2050, based on a model of territorial cohesion that enhances wealth generation and the efficient use of resources.

This money can be used by companies to install new, more efficient technologies, to replace regular cars with electric or natural gas vehicles, or to install solar panels and other renewable energy sources.

In public or private buildings, the money could be used for the installation of thermal insulation, the installation of thermally isolating windows, or for energy saving lighting solutions.

The Portuguese 2020 Regional Operational Programs will be overlooked by the Secretary of State for Regional Development, Maria do Céu Albuquerque, and the Secretary of State for Energy, João Galamba.
