Prisoners in Greece have seen their escape tunnel undermined by a dog.
The break-out plot from a jail on the island of Corfu was undone when the dog, out on a morning walk with its owner, heard unusual noises below the ground in the woods near a prison.
The hound refused to budge from the spot, prompting its owner to ring the police.
They arrived and uncovered a tunnel, reported to already be 30 metres in length, which originated in the prison’s B wing, as well as a number of prisoners who were busy digging away.
The tunnel was equipped with fans powered by batteries.
B wing is home to 21 convicts who have been given long sentences, including life.
It was not the first plan to escape by tunnel from Corfu’s prison. Several dozen prisoners made a getaway in 1996. They used an old tunnel which some English had dug when Corfu was a British protectorate (1814-1864).
