German auto manufacturer VW said it is to recall some 800,000 vehicles worldwide due to a potential foot pedal problem.
More than half of the vehicles are the Porsche Cayenne built from 2011 to 2016 and the remainder are the Toureg model.
The recall is the latest setback for the company which is already struggling to regain its reputation after it was revealed that its emissions software in 11 million of its diesel engines was designed to give false readings.
During tests by regulators, the software was able to limit the output of toxic nitrogen oxides to that stipulated by US law. But once the car was being driven, emissions of up to 40 times the legal limit provided greater fuel economy and acceleration.
Regulatory fines are still being assessed in a number of countries while the number of legal suits mounted by VW car owners predominately in the US and Germany are rising as are legal actions from shareholders seeking damages for the knock in share value since September
