Centeno football tickets case sheved

MinisterCentenoFinancePortugal’s Attorney General, Joana Marques Vidal, said today that the archiving of the investigation in the Mário Centeno ‘tickets for tax relief’ case, followed "the usual procedure."
 
This case focused on alleged benefits given by Finance Minister, Mário Centeno, in exchange for tickets to a Benfica-FC Porto football match.

Banks charging customers €5 million a day in 'account maintenance' fees

In recent years, bank charges have risen steeply with a current account now costing an average of €63 per year for ‘maintenance.’

Loulé ratepayers to fund city's northern bypass

The protocol has been signed for the council to adopt a section of the ER270, the former National Road connecting Fonte de Boliqueime to Tavira.

Portimão’s cruise terminal - another five years allowed for an environmental study

MPs demand protection for Algarve wetlands - plus UPDATE

LagoasBrancasSmallFour Algarve MPs from the ruling Socialist Party are recommending the classification and preservation of wetlands in the region.

The MPs have submitted a draft resolution to parliament recommending that the government preserves and classifies the Algarve's key wetland areas, including, it was hoped, the Lagoa wetland that currently is threatened by the construction of a Continente supermarket. (* see Update below)

Gulbenkian Foundation gets out of the oil business

oilrig2In a seismic shift in policy, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is selling its Partex oil and gas interests and is to invest in sustainable energy,  "in line with the international movement followed by other foundations.”

The Foundation owns 100% of Partex and is "currently in the process of negotiations with an interested group," to sell the oil company. 

Bank of Portugal tightens mortgage lending

bop3The Bank of Portugal has decided that Portugal’s lenders have been advancing too much money to the nation’s borrowers and is imposing restrictions to limit mortgages and personal credit.
 
Loan-to-value limits for property lending will be capped at 90% of banks’ valuations, unless the bank owns the property in question, in which case 100% is OK.

Ria Formosa islanders need €3,600 each to block latest demolition orders

The residents of Farol and Hangares on the island of Culatra, had been assured that their properties would not be touched as they had been recognised by the court in Loulé either as principal homes or as belonging to shellfishermen and fishermen.
