Second fatality in less than 24-hours on the Algarve's 'road of death'

The accident happened around 15:00 in the Troto area of Almancil.

Government sends in the goats to help forest tidy-up

forrestThe Government is sending in the goats this year as part of its determination to clear forests of dangerous and inflammable scrub.

Herds of munching quadrupeds will be used in a pilot project, announced the Secretary of State for Forests, Miguel Freitas, explaining that the Government also will be funding the use of machinery to cut back scrub.

Monchique council signs deal for 'LED lighting only'

electricityThe entire public lighting system across the municipality of Monchique is to be switched to LED* lighting, according to a protocol signed on Monday, January 15th, between the City Council and EDP Distribuição.

The deal aims to replace all types of public lighting with LEDs - covering urban, rural and semi-urban areas, gardens, public parks and leisure areas.

Iraqi twins accused of attempted murder in Rúben Cavaco case

iraqiBoysThe case dates back to August 2016, when 18-year-old Rúben Cavaco was beaten to a pulp by the twin sons of the Iraqi ambassador in Portugal, causing a tense stand-off as the attackers were covered by the rules of diplomatic immunity.

The Public Prosecutor's Office now has charged the (former) ambassador’s children for attempting to murder Cavaco in Ponte de Sor, in the Portalegre district.

Troika still rules Portugal

The Troika imposed what already had gone wrong abroad, such as the privatisation of public services. The theory was that they would be more efficient and that the supervisory agencies would stop abuses by the dominant corporations. In the UK, the government is trying to regain control over the railways while in Sweden the privatisation of some electricity distributors is being reconsidered.

Portugal wants 'quality not quantity' from Spanish tourism

madridPortugal’s Economy Minister said, from the tourism fair in Madrid, that Portugal plans an increased promotional spend to attract Spanish tourists, an increase of 30% on the 2017 figure.

This market is, "very good growth and very interesting, said Cabral at Fitur, "In Spain, in particular, external promotion is growing by 30%. It was a market where were already concentrating in 2017, but in 2018 we are pushing harder because it is a market that is growing very well and is very interesting because it is growing more in value, even more so than the number of tourists."

Algarve golf tees off 2018 with two international awards

As part of the 2018 Annual Travel Awards, the Algarve won ‘Best Golf Destination in Continental Europe’ for the second year running and ‘Best Value Golf Destination in Continental Europe’ for the fifth time since 2012.

Algarve Tourism Association reviews 2017's record performance

albufeirabeachThe Algarve Tourism Association rightly claims that 2017 was a record year and that the targets it had set for inbound tourism were achieved.

"According to the data to which we have had access, we can say that last year several records were beaten such as the number of guests, occupancy rates and revenues," said Dora Coelho, executive director of the ATA.
