Funds to cover BES depositors were taken by Novo Banco

besThe former head of legal services at Banco Espírito Santo, Rui Silveira, said in court on Monday that BES depositors were covered because the bank left provisions to reimburse everyone.

The lawyer coordinated the Legal Department of BES and advised the Board of Directors between 1992 and 2000. He then advised the board of directors until the bank went bust in August 2014.

Massive fiddle at Caixa Geral - loan records must be handed over

BoPCostaAsleepThe Public Prosecutor's Office is on the case of Caixa Geral de Depósitos and suspects that senior managers of the State-owned bank have been fiddling the books for years to hide losses, despite these managers having just been cleared by MPs on a Commission of Inquiry.

The prosecutor claims that non-performing loans, a minimum of €1.4 billion has been mentioned, were classed as 'active' even though repayments had stopped with borrowers defaulting between 2007 and 2016.

Lisbon airport baggage handlers arrested

baggagehandlersThe public prosecutor has charged 25 Lisbon airport baggage handlers with theft, thus ending the misery and anger suffered by hundreds of passengers fllying in and out of Portugal's capital.

The defendants, employees of a ground handling company at the airport, had access to passengers’ luggage as they loaded and unloaded cases in the baggage area.

Local councils’ ordered to remove 'blatant pre-election publicity'

vrsaLast Friday, July 7th, the National Election Commission gave Vila Real de Santo António’s council until Monday morning to remove  posters announcing great works achieved by the municipality.

These posters were seen as the local political party getting involved in promoting the council “to the detriment of others," and hence, broke pre-election rules.

Via do Infante drivers shelled out €35.7 million in 2016 to use EU-funded road

"Without a surgeon, people die," said Martine dos Santos, director of the Surgery Service, noting that the situation is "very serious."

Portugal moves to end waiting periods before remarriage

ChurchAltarMen have to wait 180 days to remarry but women are faced with a 300 day period. The Attorney General, Joana Marques Vidal, says this "discriminatory, unjustified and inadmissible."

The different waiting period for men and for women violates the constitutional principle of equality, as well as the Constitution that states that, "everyone has the right to start a family and to get married on an equal basis," according to a welcome statement from the Attorney General's Office that has been submitted to parliament.
