Caixa Geral's new 'bank on wheels' - 2,000 staff need to go

caixageralWhile Portugal's MPs try and uncover the documents and files needed to see exactly what did go on at the State-owned bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the new management is pushing ahead with cost savings by closing branches and shedding staff.

A voluntary terminations programme has been added to the existing early retirement package to speed up the reduction in staff numbers which is going well, albeit at significant cost.

TAP flight in drone near miss over Lisbon

airplane2A TAP flight, with 100 or more passengers on board, narrowly missed a drone on Wednesday evening as it was coming in to land at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado airport.

The near collision was at 700 metres above the ground on a flight path taking the Airbus over the 25th April Bridge.

‘Portugal's got talent’ says Barclays

barclays2Barclays bank has raised its growth estimate for Portugal, now predicting 2.9% growth in 2017, and has praised the resilience of the Portuguese government, the implementation of reforms and the recapitalisation of the banking sector.

In an analysis titled "Portugal's Got Talent," the British bank praises the performance of António Costa's policy of restraint and his implementation of reforms which has allowed the country to grow at a good pace.

New TAP board will have 'the necessary skills' claims Atlantic Gateway

tapAtlantic Gateway, the company set up by Humberto Pedrosa and David Neeleman to mount a (successful) bid for TAP, stated today that the newly announced directors for the State’s six boardroom seats, will be able to contribute to the airline’s development.

Atlantic Gateway claims to be "certain" that the new board of directors of TAP, to be confirmed on December 30th, will have "the necessary skills" and clarified that it’s up to the Gateway consortium to appoint the company's executive management.

Portuguese musician escapes London fire - at least 12 confirmed dead, so far

TowerFireA Portuguese musician who lived in the London tower block that caught fire last night, June 13th, is thankful to be alive, but lost all his possessions: ""We lost everything, everyone lost their belongings, lives were lost, many lives, especially on the upper floors," said Francisco Ramos, a 20-year-old from Madeira.

Ramos is studying at the Royal Academy of Music and comes from Funchal. He lived on the 13th floor of Grenfell Tower in Latimer Road, west London, where he shared an apartment with another Portuguese national.

Year-round lifeguard service demanded for Portugal's beaches - 'use the Matoshinos model'

albufeirabeachThe head of Portugal’s lifeguards association, Alexandre Tadeia, says a system for year-round beach watching by trained lifeguards needs to be put in place to reduce the number of deaths in the off-season -  and the beach concession holders association chief, João Correia, agrees.

On the eve of the official start to the bathing season, on Thursday June 15th, the remaining 30% of Portuguese beaches that do not yet have coverage will have lifeguards as from tomorrow morning.

Rental car storage area near Faro airport goes up in flames -

fireA fire at a rental car storage area adjoining the Agricultural Directorate in Patacão, near Faro airport, already has destroyed at least 40 vehicles as firefighters from stations in São Brás de Alportel, Olhão and Loulé tackle the blaze.

A column of smoke has been visible for miles but the fire service responded to the call at 14:18 and operatives soon were tackling the inferno, made more perilous by the possibility of petrol tanks, laden with fuel, exploding.

Cristiano Ronaldo faces jail for Spanish tax fraud

ronaldoThe Economic Crime Section of the Prosecutor's Office in Madrid has filed a complaint against the Real Madrid footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, for four fiscal crimes committed between 2011 and 2014.

The tax fraud involves €14.7 million, claims the Spanish prosecutor.
