Mário Soares, the war horse of Portuguese politics, dies at 92

soaresMário Soares has died at the venerable age of 92. The war horse of Portuguese politics was the first freely elected prime minister after the 1974 revolution ended the darkness of the Salazar years.

Soares died at the Red Cross Hospital in Lisbon today, January 7th, 2017 where he has been treated since December 13th last year.

Ria Formosa island beaches polluted by palm oil spill

CulatraPollutionAn area of localised pollution on the beaches of the Ria Formosa island of Culatra has turned into a 14 kilometre long headache.

A carpet of yellowing globs of palm oil has made the beaches un-useable and the Culatra-based organisation SOS Ria Formosa has another fight on its hands and is calling for volunteers this weekend to help clean up the mess.

Maritime Police fine Faro fishermen

ria formosa2On Thursday, about 75% of the fishermen inspected in the Faro area by the Maritime Police, were fined for not wearing their lifejackets.

The professional fishermen were on their boats and should wear a lifejacket at all times.

Algarve councils to receive €10 million in interest from withheld property taxes

portimaocamaraThe President of the Algarve Socialist Party, António Eusébio, has welcomed the Government's decision to send the interest on delayed payments to the region’s councils.

The amounts relate to interest on money collected by the State from Municipal Property Tax (IMI) and Municipal Tax on Real Estate Transfers (IMT), which were not passed on to councils in a timely manner.

'Mandatory bicycle helmet' proposal to be dropped from National Road Safety Strategic Plan,

Cycling associations disagree on the mandatory use of the helmet and the government now is saying that the use of helmets by cyclists was ‘just a proposal’ having seen the number of votes it could lose by pushing through an unpopular measure.

Iraqis dodge deadline in diplomatic immunity row

iraqiBoysThe Iraqis left it until the last minute before responding to official questions from the Portuguese Foreign Affairs Minister on whether the Iraqi ambassador's twin boys will have their diplomatic immunity lifted so that a full investigation can take place into the brutal assault on Rúben Cavaco in Ponte de Sor, last August.

Instead of making a statement, the Iraqi’s have delayed matters further by asking a series of legal questions concerning the case. This is a tactic that Portugal's Foreign Affairs Minister, Augusto Santos Silva, has swallowed, as he has given the Iraqis a further week to lift immunity, or say why not.

Isabel dos Santos given control of Angola's biggest bank

bpiPortugal's Banco Português de Investimento (BPI) bank on Thursday ceded control of Angola's biggest bank to the Unitel telecoms company run by Isabel dos Santos, daughter of the country's president.

After pressure from the European Central Bank to give up its majority stake, BPI sold 2% of Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) to Unitel to bring its stake down to 48.1%.
Unitel now holds a controlling stake of 51.9% of the leading bank in Angola.

Salmon leaps in Norway

An increase of nearly 30% was responsible for overall export value of NOK 61.4 billion (€6.7 billion), the highest export value ever recorded, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council.
