EDP fails to enforce PSD Party's electricity bill debts

psdPedro Passos Coelho’s Social Democrat Party (PSD) owes EDP thousands of euros but mysteriously the party premises have never had electricity supplies cut off.

EDP Comercial appears to have treated the PSD differently to other of its customers who would have been cut off for non-payment of their bills.

Faro and Albufeira fail WHO air pollution tests

albufeira2The citizens of six Portuguese cities are breathing air with pollution levels in excess of the fresh air standards set by the World Health Organisation.

Half of the dozen Portuguese cities analysed in 2014 by the WHO failed two tests of airborne pollution and one municipality failed both.

UPDATE: Castro Marim bodies - local German couple in suicide pact

The grim find was made at 10.30 on Wednesday by a local man attending to horses, one of which started to behave strangely and refused to continue along a path beside which the two bodies were discovered.

Portugal's tax burden again rises to fund a bloated State

The total take by the State's Tax Authority remains below the European Union average of 39% of GDP. Portugal’s taxpayers were relieved of 34% of GDP, a whopping €61.9 billion in a country of just over 10 million people.

Honey bee plight worsens as US suffers massive loss

beeMore than a quarter of honey bee colonies in the US were obliterated over the winter making a total of nearly half of all colonies disappearing in the year to April 2016.

Preliminary figures from the US Dept of Agriculture (USDA) and the Bee Informed Partnership indicate that 44% of bee colonies were wiped out during the year.

Germany middle class “shrinking”

euromillions2Middle earners in Germany are in steep decline, having plunged by 6% in two decades, according to the German Institute for Economic Research.

The study found that the number of high earners increased by 10% during the period 1991 to 2013, taking home 33% of total income in 2013.

The Office for National Statistics said industrial production – comprising manufacturing, mining and quarrying, North Sea oil and gas, and water, gas and electricity supply – is 10% lower than it was when the recession took hold in early 2008.
