EN125 accident near Algarve Shopping leaves cyclist dead at the scene

bicycleaccidentA cyclist was hit and killed by an out-of-control vehicle on the notorious EN125 near Algarve shopping in Guia yesterday morning, October 31st.

The 43-year-old local man was declared dead at the scene and police are piecing together why the Honda CRV swerved across the road and struck the cyclist head on, throwing him several metres through the air.

The INEM ambulance service responded but nothing could be done and the victim was declared dead at the crash site.

Another accident occurred in Tavira at lunchtime yesterday when a 78-year-old man was hit by a car while crossing the road. He was transported to Faro hospital with serious chest, leg and abdominal injuries. The local police are investigating this accident as well.

Portugal has more than five thousand pedestrian accidents per year accounting for 25% of those who died in road accidents in 2015.

The main cause of such accidents in Portugal is speeding but the percentage of drunk drivers involved in accidents with pedestrians is reducing.

A woman driving a black car that ran over your editor's dog on the zebra crossing in front of Olhão's twin markets is hoped already to be suffering crippling chest pains and headaches, the start of a twenty year period of bad luck and severe marital disharmony.

The accident, from which the driver drove off at top speed, left Bailey the Flying Dog in severe shock and pain from a broken pelvis but he is recovering well and regaining his position of one of Olhão's best loved and most endearing animals.

How's your dog?

Thanks for asking!
He is not so good at getting up the stairs but pretty much fully recovered. He stopped barking for about ten days, shock I suppose, and was on painkillers etc for two weeks but his pelvis has knitted back together and prefers to be on the lead when near roads, rather than this being an imposition.

Allowing cars & Vans to park within a metre of a zebra crossing and the lackadaisical way in which Portuguese pedestrians cross them, its surprising that there aren't more deaths.

Who ever designed that part of the 125 needs shooting! It's horrendous. Combine poor road design with mental Portuguese driving habits and deaths are inevitable.
