An afternoon of Algarve road accidents with two dead near Odelouca

accident125A collision on the EN124 between Silves and Odelouca left an 87-year-old driver and his wife dead at the scene and a passenger in a serious condition early this afternoon.

The crash happened at 12:04 on a bend on the road in the Vale da Lama area with the car hitting a refuse truck head-on.

The rescue and clear up operation closed the road which is notorious for its poor condition and speeding HGV traffic. The GNR attended the scene and an emergency ambulance crew took the injured passenger to hospital.

Three further accidents occurred on Thursday afternoon, two in Castro Marim and one in Vila Real de Santo António, causing six people to be injured and transported to Faro hospital and to the Urgency Service Unit in VRSA.

At around 13:00 two cars collided on the EN122 between Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim with one flipping over. Three were injured.

Shortly afterwards, a car collided with a motorcycle carrying two people who were transported to the Vila Real de Santo António by a Bombeiros ambulance.

Then there was a head-on crash between two cars on the Estrada da Mata (511) connecting Vila Real de Santo António and Monte Gordo. The wounded was transported to Faro hospital.

Data from the Road Safety Observatory shows that 9,053 accidents (the highest number in the last three years) have occurred on the Algarve’s roads so far this year, resulting in 25 deaths and 139 serious injuries.

We all are aware of the diabolically low standards of driving in Portugal. In turn, aged drivers have little or no knowledge of today's road requirements. Then, the same could be said of these stupid ferrel youngsters who attempt driving vehicles way beyond their ability. Until the PSP do their job and discipline the bad and terrible drivers problems will continue.

Many of us know the shortfalls of the quality the EN124 road with no lane markings and uneven road surface. And I am sad to hear of the accident yesterday, but I hope the officials look into the driving habits of an 87 yo driving a 1 Kw microcar (no doubt). Too often I have been behind these elderly cars, with non working brake lights, no indicators and a complete lack of road awareness. If the region had better public transport then the elderly wouldn't need to get around on public roads.
