Faro’s mayor, Rogério Bacalhau, has authorised the removal of one of the city’s most famous roundabouts - the ‘Euro Vagina’ - at the western entrance to the city.
The gently mounded roundabout, between Faro prison and the Teatro das Figuras, earned the moniker as soon as it was unveiled in the UEFA Euro 2004 football competition year.
The more correctly named 'Rotunda do Teatro' quickly became a favourite with many of the region’s male drivers but the town hall has decided after 12 years of harmless sniggering that the gently mounded shape must be removed so that drivers get a better view across the busy roundabout.
The new roundabout just won’t be the same: “but will allow better visibility,” said Rogério Bacalhau.
This work is not part of the Faro approaches redevelopment plan that was blocked by the government in October and will cost Faro ratepayers an astonishing €40,000 to have the roundabout flattened to make it altogether less visually appealing by reducing it to street level.
"In the case of the Rotunda do Teatro, the work is already planned in the budget for 2017, and it is not part of the development work frozen by the Secretary of State. This work is not very complex and will cost an estimated €40,000 to remodel the space," according to Rogério Bacalhau.
