New western Algarve cycling route to boost tourism in the great outdoors

cyclingVila do Bispo and Aljezur councils have presented a project to set up new cycling and walking routes through the two council areas in a scheme that will cost around €3 million.

The ‘Ecovia and Ciclovias do Litoral’ project was presented at the Lisbon Tourism Fair by the two councils and will be a "structuring for these two municipalities that, from the point of view of mobility and attractiveness of the countryside, will be another fundamental piece in the sustainable development of these territories.”

The objective is to create a central cycling and walking network with branches running off to places of interest and natural beauty.

The project will link to other established routes such as the Rota Vicentina, Via Algarviana, the Cultural and Environmental Historical Circuits of Aljezur and Vila do Bispo, and to the Amoreira Beach Biodiversity Station and the future Aljezur Nature Centre, among others.

The project has an estimated cost of around €3 million and already has European Regional Development Funding of €2.1 million.

Aljezur council says the news series of routes will be a "factor of enormous attractiveness for tourists and visitors to the Aljezur and Vila do Bispo areas, motivated by the contemplation and enjoyment of the natural richness of these territories, throughout the year."

This partnership between the neighboring councils will boost nature tourism in the area and will help towards what the tourist board calls 'sustainable development.'

Both of these councils certainly don't dither when it comes to getting their hands on Euro Cash. The problem is getting it out of the hands of the counsellors into the expenditure it was meant for.

What a "confusing" and a "frustrating" country this is.... manage and repair their roads (example: EN125) seems to be impossible by lack of money but now we read there is sufficient money for making new cycling and walking roads. What is the most urgent you think ? and what saves most lives you think ?
But NOT in the heads of these twisted politicians. Shame on them !

It's a good idea; many bicyclists [aka "fishheads"] are already here, and marking safe routes [off the EN roads] will be good for business, tourism, and cyclist life expectancy.

The sum of 3 million could do with some clarification; I suppose that will be 10,000 to have a kid stare at google earth for a day or two and mark out the route, and then around 1,000 sign posts at 2,990 euros each.
The little map would also benefit from more detail.
As usual, no one has told interested property or business owners anything, and no one will in future. It's up to individuals to try and figure out what the plan entails, if anything.
