Brexit Brits lose interest in the Algarve

brexitLenThe Algarve's hotels association reported today that the effects of the UK decision to leave the European Union are hitting tourism in Portugal.

“British tourists are losing interest in the Algarve and the cause is Brexit,” according to the association as the number of trips decreased by 12.6% in July compared to the same period last year.

Brits are favouring 'staycations' in the UK and those who continue to come to the Algarve have less purchasing power. The Visa survey in the UK showed an early surge in summer staycations which has boosted its domestic leisure industry as the weakness of sterling has made foreign trips more expensive. The analysis shows a 6% increase in spending in UK hotels, restaurants and pubs.

"Following Brexit, the pound devalued last year by about 15% and it would be strange if this did not have an effect on the number of British taking holidays here," said Elidérico Viegas, president of the association.

The hotel occupation rate in the month of July for the Algarve was 86.5% with turnover increasing by 4.5%. The association believes that the trend will become more pronounced in the coming months.

In 2016, the British market was the largest source of tourists, an increase of 14.7% over the previous year.

Friend of mine said that flights have become cheaper to faro, and the reason for this was that all the accommodation was completely booked out in the busy destinations. No point in booking a flight if you have no where to stay.

Why not try a less busy destination? Far more attractive, more accommodation, and so much more enjoyable.

one of the big positives for the EU is the most awful people on the planet - the brexit halfwits will no longer come - perfect - no squealing brats with no manners - no drunken halfwits telling us how british baked beans are better - no tattooed yobs throwing up on the paths - the UK are welcome to keep these people - the holiday resorts of the EU can only be a better place without them - good riddance to bad rubbish

Better to keep your mouth shut steve01 and appear stupid, rather than open it and remove all doubt. What a presumptuous offensive person you are

Well said Perry. My guess is that the majority of slob Brits didn't even vote anyway. SteveO1 needs to rethink. What makes him think Brexiteers are half wits? Those people that voted leave only want what they see as best for UK, that does not make them mentally incapable.

steve01, what a brainless comments. Where is your evidence that the people you describe voted one way or another? I've been surprised to find out which of the people I know - friends, work colleagues, other acquaintances - voted which way. I can see no discernible pattern, other than a wish to have the UK making its own decisions. I'm talking about young and old, rich and poor, black and white. It's democracy, that's all. It doesn't imply a hatred of Europe or Europeans, or indeed any other non-British people, and my limited research indicates it's not tattoo-driven either.

The esteemed Ed. called Viegas an 'arse' the other day for supporting the shaming and victimisation of a British origin Burkini wearing Brit. Entirely unaware that Portugal should by now be reaching basic EU standards in 'Human Rights', both to other internal EU citizens and external visitors.
Perhaps our Ed. gives people like Viegas too much substance. Makes them out to be more solid than they are. These people are better described as ****holes !

Is this a new "fantasy" of old chap Eliderico Viegas.? It really becomes time the guy takes and enjoys of his pension rathet than telling nonsense and ennoying people with fairy tales. Luckily nobody believes this shit.
