Sub-sea cable from Portugal to Latin America - a Spanish and Brazilian investment

oceanA subsea cable between Sines, on Portugal’s west coast, and Santos in Fortaleza, Brazil, is to be laid with a commissioning date set for sometime in 2019.

The €170 million investment by Ellalink, owned by Brazilian and Spanish investors, will have a European base in the ZILS Business Centre in Sines.

The 10,000 kilometre sub-sea communications cable will connect Europe directly to Latin America,

"The interest in this infrastructure is due to the fact that Europe is the continent with the largest number of international connections and offers direct access to 75% of the content sought by users in Latin America,” read a statement from aicep Global Parques.

The agreement for the Portuguese infrastructure base was signed on Tuesday between Ellalink, the strategic communications infrastructure company, and aicep Global Parques in a ceremony attended by the Secretary of State for Internationalisation, Eurico Brilhante Dias.

I am no geologist but isn't there a major fault line to be crossed ? Perhaps today's materials will allow the cable to expand and flex during the next 'Big 'Un'.

The original undersea link was laid 1884 from Carcavelos via Cabo Verde to Pernambuco. It is astonishing that undersea cables between Europe and South America have been in use for more than 130 years.

Incidentally, Brilhante Dias is a wonderful name.

And which national security agencies will be tapping into this connection to spy on us? NSA, GCHQ etc...
