Invalidity benefit scam – Doctors charged €3,000 a time to sign false reports

11446Three doctors are being tried for defrauding the State by signing false clinical reports to enable patients to receive invalidity pensions.

The scheme had cost taxpayers at least €39,000 before it was uncovered.

The Public Prosecutor's investigation claims that the crooked scheme provided invalidity pensions for patients who paid Doctors €3,000 a time to ensure their invalidity claims went through on appeal.

These Boards of Appeal, consisting of two doctors designated by the State and a doctor designated by the applicant, were deceived in at least six cases, although 12 people are said to been involved in the scam.

People applied to Social Security for an invalidity pension, claiming they could not work due to incapacity.

When the medical board found the patients were fit and well, the clients appealed and claimed the right to appoint a physician of their choice to represent them at a review.

Paying the dodgy Doctors the €3,000 fee, applicants were assured of a successful claim for a disability pension.

Those involved now face court in Braga, standing accused of tax fraud and false testimony.
