Lagoa Council indifferent to destruction of local environment

LagoaWetlandAt a meeting of Lagoa Council last week, members of the public once again witnessed the indifference of council leaders to the destruction of one of the Algarve's few remaining wetlands - Alagoas Brancas, writes Geoff Blofeld.

While campaigners argued passionately against the destruction of the wetland council president, Fransisco Martins, shared a joke with his colleagues on the top table. Another council official ignored the proceedings completely and stared intently at his mobile phone.

Visitors from Portimão and other Algarve cities, witnessing a Lagoa council meeting for the first time, were shocked at the indifference of Martins to the views of campaigners.

Speakers included a lawyer, a town planner, and a biologist but this counted for nothing as Martins issued his customary evasive reply on the subject.

Bemused visitors wondered how Lagoa Council can boast about measuring it's environmental footprint while it sanctions the wilful destruction of nature on its doorstep.

Campaigners rightly ask, why does the president of Lagoa Council want to transform his city into a concrete jungle?

Why is the Portuguese language press silent on the subject?

Why are local residents, businesses, and even schools afraid to speak out against this injustice?

Why is there a lack of transparency and deliberate obstruction by the council?

These were questions which the visitors later asked local campaigners outside the meeting hall. Then, the president walked calmly by and ignored the group completely. They had their answer.

Destruction of the Alagoas Brancas Wetlands is a gross exaggeration to say the least. Fake News!

Ana,
I support what you are saying, but there are a bunch of monkeys that often write a lot of fictitious nonsense and then give themselves a green thumb.
However, there are a small group who care about right and wrong and these contributors will point out the error of the monkeys way, on occasions.

It is hard to argue with a monkey, you have to come down to it's level of comprehension and naturally you always loose the argument.

Jack Reacher types with his heart as well as his head. With this combination if he occasionally hits the wrong key that just shows the strength of his feeling at the stench of corruption across Portuguese public administration and life in general. Pick up any of the Portuguese dailies and see pages of police, regulator and political investigations and ask yourself is this all just an empty show for Brussels to indicate "we are now getting a grip"? Which superior can be leading these investigations when until very recently any police or regulator at any level of superiority attempting effective, impartial investigations would have been ostracised as 'gone rogue' - not a team player so not to be trusted.

Are there no photos of the council members sitting at the top table? Corruption works best in the shadows. Once outed and circulated globally on social media the enormous amounts of honour held by these great worthies becomes irrelevant; particularly in those more evolved 'integrity' countries - that value integrity more than 'honour'. Also it becomes noticed in Lisboa and a photo need never die on the internet so can be published again at the next elections - if the wetlands are damaged.

Lagoa council turn a blind eye to this because mamoney talks. Many of them will be receiving perks from allowing this destruction to go ahead. There are many things that Lagoa council allow to happen which are not permitted in other areas.

Sadly it happens in all countries that it is often left to a small group to fight the cause. I have to say in this case that there are, in fact, many local people who care but they are afraid of the repercussions. I have witnessed this first hand. I have witnessed intimidation by council officials in public meetings. This is designed to discourage any challenge. Thankfully there is an increasing number of Portuguese members of this group who are prepared to take the fight to the council. Watch RTP news tonight and you will see them in action.
