Algarve Tourist Board boss calls on police not to mess things up

desideriosilvaDesidério Silva is not happy. As head of the Algarve region’s tourist board the last thing he needs is for members of the police to hang around the airport handing out leaflets to tourists informing them they are not safe.

This of course is exactly what is planned and Silva, as chairman of the executive committee of Tourism of the Algarve, formally has called for the National Union of Police to desist in its protest lest its actions spoil the carefully created image of safety that the Algarve has been promoting in the recent past, backed up by statistics showing this indeed is the case.

Silva sees the police action as “jeopardising the recovery of tourism, which already shows positive indicators, and threatening expected job growth.”

“Despite the difficult national financial situation and the enormous effort required from the Portuguese in recent years, the Police Union 'SINAPOL' should not be undermining the country's recovery and spoiling tourism, a sector that is seen as the engine of our economy particularly in the Algarve” reads the terse press release sent to media this afternoon.

“This police action would have a devastating effect, destroying years of work and investment in the image of Portugal and the Algarve as one of the safest tourist destinations in the world. The repercussions would be incalculable for the region's economy.”

The Tourist Board’s executive committee publicly recognises the commitment of the various services and security forces in the Algarve, but appeals to the common sense of law enforcement officers to preserve the best interests of the region through dialogue and consultation, and not by handing out leaflets to tourists.

Bang On RCK. We had a similar experience last week with some cops who were hanging around a roundabout on the N125 near Tavira. They knew we were tourists and tried to get us to pull over, but we just drove away. Not sure I'd recommend the Algarve to anyone. What a joke.

The whole country seems corrupt .I received a demand from the offoce of the notary informing me I owed over €450 to the government from about 6 years previous when i purchased a property seeking payment or after eight days interest would accrue not being in Portugal I paid. When I returned to Portugal I found out from a source that it was the builder who also received a demand that owed not me my wife also received a demand but I've been told that the chances of getting my money back is zero their attitude is someone has to pay even if its not the person who owes the money

"Police to hang around the airport handing out leaflets to tourists informing them they are not safe" ...... Not safe from what exactly? Intoxicated off duty police officer(s) mowing down and killing innocent members of the public at the crack of dawn by any chance?. The risk of getting caught up in illicit and illegal games of bingo in their hotel lobby? Or perhaps not being safe from GNR officers lurking at numerous roundabouts on the N125 waiting to pounce on and fine on the spot, unsuspecting tourists who have committed the hineous crime of eg forgetting to pick up their driving licence when they popped down to the local shop to pick up a newspaper. Can't wait to pick up a leaflet next time I fly into Faro airport to see what other horrors await me on the Algarve.
