Lufthansa called another strike

lufthansaThe German carrier Lufthansa will continue its strike action, going out on Monday and Tuesday.

This will make the ninth walkout for Europe’s biggest airline since April.

Short- and medium-haul flights across Germany will be affected from 12 until 23.00.

On Tuesday long-haul flights will be hit as well as cargo ones.

Lufthansa pilots are in protracted dispute over the company’s plans to phase out its early retirement scheme, which the pilots oppose.

Currently, they can retire at the age of 55 and receive up to 60% of their pay until the standard retirement age of 65.

Lufthansa management said it has made recent concessions, including a 5% pay increase. It called the strike disproportionate.

The strikes so far have cost the airline £102m in operating profits.

These 'dinosaur' airline strikes are becoming common place.

But that are dinosaurs in that the world has moved on from cosseted special perks flag carriers for specific countries. Cheap flights are the rage.

Particularly as Brussels limits subsidies and at the end of the road is only a bottomless pit.

How can a politician justify paying a pilot 100,000 a year from the public purse when you could recruit say 5 nurses instead ?
