Faro Bikers Festival marred by tragedy

inemA woman has died having been hit by a motorbike which then crashed, severely injuring the driver and pillion passenger.

The accident happened early on Saturday morning near Montenegro in Faro on the access road to the airport and Motorcycle Festival,

The injured bikers, a man of 23 and a woman of 22, were taken to Faro hospital and are said by staff both to be in serious condition.

The accident occurred about 1.30am when the pedestrian, a woman aged 24, was hit by the motorbike which then crashed.

The road where the accident occurred connects the EN125 with the airport and Vale das Almas where the 34th bikers’ festival is taking place, ending on Sunday night.

At the opening of the event, the president of the Moto Clube de Faro, José Amaro, said he expected at least 15,000 participants and appealed to motorcyclists to take the utmost care on the road,

"Come here and enjoy what we have organised - the good atmosphere - and return home without any accidents. This is the main part - to come and to get home without any accidents is a major victory.”

Sadly this event now has been marked by tragedy.

As a biker myself, I regularly experience pedestrians stepping out in front of me and car drivers also have a complete disregard and pull out or turn without indicating even though they could not fail to see me with my headlight on full beam. Portugal is not a safe environment for bikers and I'm surprised that more are not killed.
