Maltese bird killing case goes to court

maltaMalta is facing judgement by the EU’s top court because of its controversial tradition of shooting birds which are migrating in spring.

The EU has long been uneasy with the island nation over the matter.

Defenders say that hunting the birds while they are making their way across the Mediterranean to Europe from Africa is a long-established custom.

Critics believe the practice means birds are shot dead before they can breed.

Although the EU has banned spring hunting, Malta applies every year to get a short period of exemption

The European Commission said these exemptions must be used "judiciously, with small numbers and strict supervision". It added that "these conditions have not been met in this case."

It sent formal warnings to Malta last October and again this May. Malta disputed the Commission’s view and went ahead with the hunt.

The case has not been sent to the European Court of Justice.

Support for the habit appears to be waning in Malta. In an April refernedum voters gave narrowly approval to the continuation of the hunts.

No more than a kilometre from Lagos I have found bird traps baited with live ants, presumably placed by the local gipsies in the neighbouring shanty town.

Needless to say I have removed them.

This parallels so many of the other examples of backwardness and ignorance found elsewhere in the Graeco-Roman world.

To be fair there are Maltese well aware nowadays of the breeding seasons of the birds that are passing though to nest elsewhere but the way to bring it home to the Maltese is through a boycott of their tourism. About one fifth of their GDP. Then these middle class gunny's will realise !

But then countries ike Portugal do not effectively patrol their own gunny's. Look at any static gun hide after the gunny has gone and more than likely will be a pigeon or dove nearby. Not legal to hunt but bagged by mistake. Left out for passing wild dogs. But in total ignorance that doves mate for life.

So now look at the neighbouring electricity lines for the surviving mate. Pining for his lost love.
