Vila Real de Santo António council has authorised a tender for the construction of a new sports themed hotel.
The municipality’s company VRSA SGU has published the tender for the hotel’s construction, operation and management at a site by the Santo António Sports Complex.
The hotel must cater for athletes who train at the sports centre and the project is part of the council’s plan to cater for the growing sports tourism market.
The plan is for a four star hotel of around 100 rooms next to the tennis courts of the Sports Complex, between the dunes area and the historical city center.
Mayor Luís Gomes said the planned hotel "is a clear sign of the economic attractiveness of Vila Real and will be our first top class hotel; a sign of recognition for the Sports Complex which is used by thousands of Olympic athletes and some of the world's best sports teams."
Companies tendering for the project need also to submit a marketing plan that will position the hotel brand in the sports and health sector.
