British toddler drowns in pool at Carvoeiro villa

carvoeirobeachA British toddler has drowned in a pool at a privately rented villa in the Carvoeiro area. He was two and a half years old.

The Judicial Police are investigating the possibility of negligence on the part of the boy's family.

The villa in the Quinta do Paraíso area had been rented by a British family for a fun holiday in the sun but it all ended in tragedy.

When firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene the little boy’s heart had already stopped beating and resuscitation efforts were made at the scene but to no avail.

The parents were sharing the villa with extended family and the police are looking into the circumstances that allowed the toddler to fall into the pool un-noticed when there were adults around. The toddler's mother and grandmother were said not to have been at the villa at the time of the accident, leaving the men in charge.

Correio da Manhã reported that, “one of the theories under investigation is the excessive consumption of alcohol drinks by family members,” but as yet no facts relating to the case have been released by the authorities.

Quoting Charly:
During the 15 years we operated as a villa renter for larger goups (up to 16 pax) from the 400 groups and the 19 nationalities that ever rented the villa there were only 2 nationalities that ALWAYS caused troubles: the English and the Irish people. As these people come exclusively to the Algarve "for BOOZING" they have a very simple philosophy about toddlers and younger children: eitherthey lock them up in a room (so that they can play....) or they put them in the pool so that the parents should have their hands (and their minds) free to focus on the BOOZE. We had to intervene several times when it was Obvious the parents were totally loaded and the kids were literally abandoned. Unfortunately I hear from colleagues they also experience constantly the same dramas.
It has to be said that FENCING A POOL while rented out to a British family is to be considered as a CRIME: once the children are "locked up" in the pool cage they can not escape but most of them start panicking and so the drawning accidents happen most of the time.
And which are "the best nationalities" you may ask?
n°1 the Canadians, n°2 the Scandinavians, n°3 the Americans.

What bits of that quote do you not understand?
