Portuguese owe €15 billion to the taxman

financasAt the end of 2015, the Portuguese owed the Tax Authority €15.5 billion, an increase of €817 million during the year and a ten year record.

Much of the 2015 total is for sums owed that have resulted in insolvency proceedings.

The tax office says that it expects to recover €7.1 billion of the total owed but last year managed only to recover €1.2 billion using the dreaded ‘coercive collection’ system.

According to the 2015 tax evasion report from the Tax Authority, the outstanding year-end total is the highest since 2011.

In these tax evasion Graeco-Roman countries like Portugal why is tax paying not taught as a subject at school? That it is healthy and makes for strong moral fibre and that the life of the bandido is out of date - wrong for today's Europe. Like the Old West became in the US. It could usefully replace all the African Colony history stuff that the kids spend so many hours learning.

Lets start seeing Portuguese actors on their endless 'Eastenders' type TV dramas filling in tax returns and discussing which box to fill in and why. Like the Archers 50 odd years ago on UK radio reminding farmers what they should be planting. Government Information. Go for it, Portugal. You can have that suggestion for free (actually me and him have already paid heavily for it so don't waste it)
