Dead dolphin and Minke whale washed ashore in eastern Algarve

minkeWhaleThe corpses of a dolphin and of a Minke whale were washed ashore in the eastern Algarve and discovered by walkers early this morning

The two metre long adult dolphin and the baby Minke whale were found at Barril beach, Tavira and Manta Rota beach, Vila Real de Santo António, according to the Maritime Authority.

Both animals were dead and were removed by council staff for burial at landfill sites, according to the commander of the port of Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, Pedro Palma.

The dolphin at Barril was already in a bad state of decomposition and had been washed ashore due to recent strong waves and the southeasterly current along the Algarve coast.

The infant Minke whale at Manta Rota was about 1.5 metres long. Adults grown to between 6.9 and 8 metres (pictured).

The waves today along the Algarve coast reached a maximum height of 1.7 metres with a seawater temperature of 24.7 degrees, according to the Hydrographic Institute.
