Councils' legal action thwarts CTT's plans to close Algarve post offices

cttcounterPortugal’s Post Office company, CTT, has been thwarted in its well developed plan to close branches in the western Algarve.

An injunction, to be lodged by the Association of Municipalities Terras do Infante, i.e. Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo Councils, plus Lagoa have joined forces to halt the closure of post offices in Aljezur, Praia da Luz, Sagres and Carvoeiro.

Silves Council backs former Alicoop workers all the way

alisuperSilves Council has declared its solidarity with former Alicoop supermarket workers who were forced to take out loans to keep the company afloat, or lose their jobs, and who are being pursued by the lender.

The Council has called for a suspension of the bank’s debt recovery action as the workers are not liable, under an agreement reached during the insolvency process.

gnrA member of the GNR on traffic duty has been accused of trousering money handed over by motorists for traffic violations.

The Public Prosecutor's Office in Portimão is prosecuting the 45-year-old GNR guard from Lagos for 36 instances of embezzlement, 38 crimes of forgery, passive corruption and abuse of power.

Couple arrested for São Brás murder

handcuffThe Judiciary Police has identified and detained a couple suspected of the murder of Vítor Horta in São Brás de Alportel.

The Police stated that the case, "dates back to 18 September 2018, the day on which the corpse of a man, a septuagenarian, was found by a relative inside his house."

Bank of Portugal to be supervised by Finanças

bop2A diploma has been discussed in a Council of Ministers meeting to subject the financial management of the Bank of Portugal to supervision by the General Inspectorate of Finance.

The Inspectorate already supervises services and public entities and the Government wants the Bank of Portugal to undergo the same rigours, with the exception of its role as the country's Central Bank.

Culatra Island in renewable energy pilot

culatraThe Algarve University’s ‘Culatra 2030 - Sustainable Energy Community’ project being run with the Culatra Island Residents Association has been selected by the Secretary for Clean Energy for EU Islands to be a test base for localised renewable energy production.
 
Technical solutions will be discussed with groups of experts, including researchers, business associations and business sector technicians in a debate with the residents.

Post Office fiddles the books to justify rise in postage rates

cttvanAuditors, appointed by Anacom to keep a check on the accounts issued by Portugal's privatised post office, concluded that CTT has been fiddling the books by apportioning costs to the postal service that in fact were incurred while setting up in-store branches of Banco CTT.

The regulator says the cost-sharing methodology used by CTT, between the various parts of the business, is inadequate and has allowed part of Banco CTT’s costs to be attributed to the universal postal service which allowed management to push for an increase in postal charges while making the bank's figures look better than in reality.
