Half of Portugal's population failed to visit the dentist for a year

teethBADNearly half of Portugal’s population failed to visit a dentist in 2017. This is above the EU average of 45% but hardly an impressive result.

According to data now released by Eurostat, 34% of Portuguese go to the dentist once or twice a year but many simply don’t bother.

Number of Algarve fishermen drops 56%

octopus2The number of fishermen registered in the Algarve recorded the sharpest reduction in the country between 2001 and 2017, a decrease of 56%, according to data released this week by PORDATA.

In 2017, there were 17,642 fishermen in Portugal, 25% less than in 2001 - a decrease that occurred in all regions of the country but the Algarve has been badly hit with a decrease of 56% to just 2,713 in 2017.

CTT shares fall sharply as dividend cut by 73%

ctt2The 28% drop in profits and a 73% cut in the dividend pushed CTT’s shares to their year’s low point today.

Shares of the privatised company, led by Francisco de Lacerda, fell more than 7% in today’s trading, the largest drop since May 2018, when shares fell 10% in a day.

Ryanair fined €3 million for deceptive handluggage policy

ryanair13Ryanair has been fined €3 million for introducing a highly deceptive hand luggage policy last November that left customers baffled and competition authorities sharpening their pencils.

The significant fine over Ryanair’s chiselling scheme came from the Italian Competition Authority.

Águas do Algarve testing techniques to remove drugs from waste water

water2The regional water company, Águas do Algarve, has announced further research into a project to control pharmaceutical compounds in urban wastewater treatment plants.

The investigation has been approved under the LIFE 2014-2017 programme and the main objectives are to monitor and to determine the efficiency of removing drugs from waste water treatment plants using conventional treatment systems, as well as evaluating new techniques.

Study of Algarve wetlands to thwart developers

salgadosThe Almargem Association has submitted an application to the Environmental Fund for a project that seeks to understand more about the Algarve region’s several wetlands in support of their classification as protected areas.

According to Almargem, the areas of Trafal and Foz do Almargem (Loulé), Lagoa dos Salgados and Sapais da Pêra (Silves, Albufeira) and Alagoas Brancas (Lagoa) are included.

Advice from National Maritime Authority - 'Don't swim in the sea this weekend'

seasThe temperature is rising across the Algarve so the National Maritime Authority has posted an alert for people to be sensible on the region’s beaches and coastal areas even suggesting that swimming in the sea is not a good idea this weekend.

The authority says that it is important to remember that the sea at this time of year is a winter sea, meaning that beaches and coastal areas are at high risk due to the effects of recent high seas. This has left some steep slopes in the sand and a danger of whirlpools and rip-tides.
