Ria Formosa - Environment Minister's pro-demolition report

DemolitionCulatraApril2017The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) remains frustrated at the government’s inaction in resolving the Ria Formosa islands’ demolition programme, despite claims that everything will be settled and the island conflict is over.

In a communiqué sent to the press, the PCP said it has lodged a draft resolution, "recommending that the government puts an end to house demolitions on the islands of the Ria Formosa," in particular, those announced for the beginning of November 2018 in areas of Farol and Hangars on the island of Culatra.

Olhão resident arrested on child porn charges

6208aSubsequent to last week’s arrest of a man in Portimão on charges of possessing and distributing child pornography, the Police have caught a second man, this time in Olhão, a city better known for its drugs and prostitution.

The Police said that, "in the course of the investigation and during a home search, a number of files of pornographic content involved children under the age of 14 were found in the computer systems used by the suspect."

Money laundering - Portuguese politican under investigation by Swiss authorities

pvMiguel Barreto, the former Director General of Energy - and a suspect in the current EDP price fixing and bungs inquiry - has been under investigation in Switzerland for almost a year, suspected of money laundering.

The Swiss authorities are convinced that money transferred to Barreto’s bank account in Geneva was a financial reward for corrupt activities in Portugal.

Ryanair strike starts midday on Friday

ryanair13Dutch pilots’ union VNV has announced it will join pilots and crew from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Belgium in a 24/hour strike on Friday 28 September.

Pilots hope to win a pay deal which “guarantees fundamental workers’ rights,” the VNV union said in a statement. “The Dutch demands are modest: Dutch law should be applied; no more bogus self-employment; and sufficient sick pay and pension.”

State powerless to halt boom in bank lending

euromillions2The Secretary of State for Finance said today that banks should exercise caution in granting credit, especially to consumers, so as not to jeopardise the work done in making institutions more sound, calling for "vigilance."

"Without an adequate risk assessment, an increase in lending to individuals is a short-term strategy that may call into question what has been achieved by banks and shareholders in recent years," said Ricardo Mourinho Félix at the Bank of the Future conference in Lisbon.

Former TAP President named in corruption investigation

tap2The former president of TAP, Fernando Pinto and four others are indicted in a corruption investigation, according to the Public Prosecution Service.

The information was confirmed on Tuesday by the Attorney General's Office, after a report in Púbico stated that Pinto had been made a defendant in an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the purchase and management of Varig Engineering and Maintenance between 2005 and 2007.
