Sir Cliff Richard starts legal action against BBC and South Yorkshire Police

CliffRichard2The singer, Sir Cliff Richard, has instructed his lawyers to submit a formal complaint to South Yorkshire Police and the BBC over their roles in the police raid on his home counties luxury apartment.

Police were investigating historical sex allegations and in 2014 raided his penthouse in Berkshire to the accompaniment of a BBC film crew and reporter.

Sunshine Tax to push up property rates by 10%

villaThe National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) has estimated that the new ‘sunshine tax’ will lead to a 10% rise in annual property tax (IMI) for recategorised properties.

Good sun exposure and/or a privileged view are two of the criteria being used by the government to extract more money from property owners who own what now are defined as luxury and privileged properties beacuse they face south.

Novo Banco aims to sell over €500 million of property

novobancoshinylogoNovo Banco polyglots are manning a stand at the Lisbon property fair, charged with shifting €500 million of real estate using loan offers tailored to foreign buyers.

The fair, which started today and runs until Saturday, sees Novo Banco aiming to "streamline its real estate supply, mainly for foreign customers, taking into account the bank’s target to sell more than €500 million in 2016."

Portuguese tourism growth well ahead of Mediterranean rivals

tourismThe ubiquitous Secretary of State for Tourism, Ana Mendes Godinho, today announced that Portugal is the country with the highest growth in tourism of those along the northern Mediterranean coast, with an 11.5% growth rate which has created 40,000 sector jobs this year.

"Portugal registered a significant growth compared to last year," said Godinho during a hearing at the economy committee meeting today.

Olhão's shopkeepers suffer the consequences of vandalism and theft

acralThe head of the Algarve’s traders association, ACRAL, has asked for an urgent discussion with Olhão police commander Jorge Domingues to "share and verify the feasibility of a set of ideas from the association to fight and reduce the wave of robberies and incidents of vandalism in the commercial streets of the historic centre."

The president of the association of traders, Álvaro Viegas, expressed his concerns to commander Domingues over “recent events recorded in the commercial downtown Olhão, where many shops have been vandalised and robbed."

Government evades responsibility for 30 crumbling national monuments

The meiapraiaMinister of the Economy, Manuel Caldeira Cabral, explained today the government’s latest plan to offer degraded national monuments to private businesses on 30-50 year leases to be run as tourism businesses.

In addition to allowing the private sector to get its hands on some of Portugal's most important monuments, the government has set aside a fund of €150 million which successful bidders can access to renovate these buildings and turn them into tourist attractions.

Italy – another southern nation on the move abroad

airplaneA larger number of Italians opted to leave their country last year than the year before, increasing by more than 6%.

The data showed that 107,529 Italians emigrated in 2015. The majority, 37%, were aged between 18 and 34.

EasyJet flies on but with lower profits

easyjetEasyJet has said that it will suffer its first fall in annual profit since 2009 caused by a year of “extraordinary events”.

The airline says its pre-tax profit for the year is likely to be around £490m, according to a trading update. This would be a drop of 28% compared to last year’s figure of £686m.
