Your Algarve News Highlights - July 22nd 2023

Dear Reader,

A brief weekly news overview this week, due to us closing the office for a few days, to visit family in UK. Normal service will resume on Monday.

Ex-boyfriend who stabbed young woman has been arrested

The 21 year ex-boyfriend of Joana Nascimento, could not deal with the end of the relationship so stabbed her with a knife in the neck, has now been arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ).

He had already threatened her on other occasions, including at work and at home. Joana however, never filed a complaint against him.

The young man had already surrendered to the authorities accompanied by a lawyer at the GNR in Lagoa, two days after the young woman was attacked, but he was still at liberty.

Joana, 26 years old, a kindergarten teacher, was attacked by her ex-boyfriend on June 15th, when she was leaving her house, in Lagoa, around 8:30 am. The young woman was on her way to work.

After being attacked, she managed to flee the scene and ask for help. She was then transported to the hospital and even returned home, but began to feel unwell and ended up going by helicopter to Hospital Santa Maria, in Lisbon, where she died.

Faro hospital: Lack of doctors 'closes' pediatric emergency for 24 hours

The Pediatric Emergency department at Faro hospital is closed this Tuesday until midnight, due to the lack of doctors.

The most serious patients will be forwarded to the Hospital de Portimão, sadid the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), Ana Varges Gomes, meaning if you live in Tavira or VRSA, you will have to travel up to 120km to reach the pediatric emergency room.

“With the difficulty of human resources, we have to have options and at least one answer in the region”, said Ana Vargues Gomes to journalists, after a visit by the Parliamentary Health Commission, destined to assess the conditions for treating residents and tourists during the summer.

The CHUA president said that the SNS executive committee had adopted the “principle that Pediatric Emergency is guaranteed”, whether in Faro or Portimão.

Lagoa: Body of man found on the beach at Vale do Olival

The body of a man was found on the rocks of Vale do Olival beach in Porches yesterday morning, Sunday 16th July, at around 8am.

The causes of the mans death are currently unknown.

Emergency services were alerted at 08:06 on Sunday, and death was declared on the spot by the INEM doctor. The body was transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Portimão by the Fire Department, after authorization by the Public Ministry.

Investigations are being carried out regarding the cause of death.

Portimão: Serial car robber is caught at last

The PSP have arrested a 56 year old man for seven crimes of vehicle theft over the last year, using video surveillance footage taken in Praia da Rocha.

According to the Faro District Command of the PSP , “the suspect used different methods to commit thefts, such as drilling holes in vehicle tires or other distracting actions, with the aim of causing the drivers to leave their respective vehicles, enabling the quick removal of articles that were visible inside the cars”.

Another method adopted by the detainee consisted of “opening one of the vehicle doors when the owners were using remote controls to lock them. In this way, that door remained unlocked and it was possible to access the vehicles later and discreetly, to carry out the theft”.

The man was highly meticulous in his actions, travelling to in to Portimão sporadically to commit the thefts, then leaving for indefinite periods in between.

Throughout the year long investigation, the Portimão PSP collected evidence of six thefts from vehicles, with value of around €3200 euros, but were unable to track down the man.

This Sunday morning, when viewing images obtained through the video surveillance system installed in the Praia da Rocha area, it was at last possible to catch the suspect when he had just committed yet another theft, stealing items worth around €900 from the car. These items were recovered and handed over to the rightful owner.

The man will be present in Court today, for the application of coercive measures considered appropriate while awaiting trial.
