GNR out in force over the New Year's weekend

breathalizerThe GNR has given due warning to motorists that between December 30th and next January 2nd, the nation’s motorists can expect an increase in the number of roadside inspection points and an increased number of mobile units.

Patrol and roadside inspections will focus on routes to and from locations associated with the New Year’s Eve festivities, where the GNR also will be in evidence to increase the safety of revellers, to prevent road accidents by removing drunk drivers from the nation’s roads.

The Algarve is putting on an excellent range of New Year's Eve entertainment with mosty cities hosting bands and putting on a firework display, the mayors being well aware that 2017 is an election year. (See: New Year's Eve celebrations across the Algarve )

During the inventively named 'Operation New Year,' roadside GNR and police officers primarily will be looking for those driving while drunk or under the influence of illegal drugs. Mobile units will be looking for speeding drivers, incorrect or non-use of seat belts and restraint systems for children, and the use of a mobile phone while driving.

These are the three main causes of casualties on Portuguese roads, so the GNR is appealing now that all drivers are careful and only get behind the wheel when sober as one in three drivers killed on Portugal’s roads was over the alcohol limit at the time of impact.

I was pleased to learn from my ex-GNR neighbour's wife, that despite being recognised by former colleagues, her husband was still subjected to a breathaliser test at a roadside inspection. She was amused by his experience but it demonstrates that some GNR officers apply the law without favouritism.
