Lagoa Council indifferent to destruction of local environment

Disinterest and distrust: European elections get record levels of abstention

parliamentPortuguese voters showed a combination of disinterest and distrust in last Sunday’s European elections.

Abstention-levels nudged 70% as many preferred the lure of the beach, while a ‘surprising’ number of voters made the effort to turn up at polling stations to deliver ‘blank’ or so-called ‘void’ ballot papers.

Fire breaks out near Armação de Pêra camping site

bombeirosOver 40 firefighters – aided by 11 land vehicles and one helicopter – are battling a fire which broke out near the Armação de Pêra camping site this Monday afternoon.

Authorities were alerted shortly after 1pm that an area of scrubland near the camping site was on fire.

These resources include food, fiber, timber, carbon absorption and land. Portugal for example reached its annual limit last Sunday, 21 days earlier than the result for last year. Luxembourg, on the other hand, exceeded its limits back in February.

Outside Europe, the situation can be better.

Hit-and-runs on increase: Portugal registers over 1000 a year

Suddenly, Portugal is registering over 1000 such incidents a year – to huge detriment of victims left to pay the damages no matter whose fault the accidents may have been . Explain reports, without ‘two parties’ involved, there can be no compensation via the Automobile Guarantee Fund – set up to compensate drivers in accidents where one or more parties have no insurance.

The only safety net for drivers can be if they have fully comprehensive insurance, and even then they will find their premiums substantially increased the following year.

European elections in Portugal - Socialist Party keeps firm grip on power

europeanparliamentAccording to exit polls, the ruling Socialist Party was way ahead in Portugal’s European Parliamentary elections with 30% to 34% of the votes.

The People Animals Nature party had a candidate elected for the first time after gaining 4% to 6% of the votes.
