Plastic greenhouses 'out of control' in Costa Vicentina Natural Park

EstufasEnvironmental organisation, ZERO, has analysed a report on the growth of intensive agriculture in the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park and concludes that it is out of control.
 
ZERO has seen a report from the General Inspectorate of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning relating to the control procedures, inspection and the halting and reversal of illegal agricultural activity that is meant to be carried out by the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF).

Only two Councils say they will hit May 31st 'scrub cleaning' deadline

fireforestOnly two of Portugal Councils will manage to have cleared scrub from public land as well as ensuring that private landowners comply with the new scrub cleaning laws by the end of May deadline.
 
Of the 189 municipal areas at ‘high fire risk’ - according to the ICNF - only 13 Councils will have cleared their public land by the end of the month. Not one of these Councils is in the Algarve but Silves will be close.

Salvato Trigo received a one year and three months sentence for ‘diverting’ more than €2 million from the private University for his own benefit and that of his family. 

Record easyJet figures help boost employment in Portugal's hotels and restaurants

vilamourahotelPortugal’s restaurants and hotels have registered a welcome number of job increases as at the end of the first quarter of 2018, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics.
 
For the first time in 10 years, the number of jobs at the end of March was up on the year before as the sector employed an additional 21,400 people. The restaurant sector led the increase, taking on 17,400 new members of staff taking the total in the market, to over 315,000.

Messines Prison given the go-ahead after a 30-year delay

With the abstention of the Social Democratic Party MPs, all the political groups agreed that a new prison, to be built in Messines, was a good thing and somewhat  overdue.
