Fleet of 50 helicopters and aircraft in place for summer fire duty

KamovHelicopterThe president of the National Civil Protection Authority (ANPC) said there will be 50 machines, a mixture of aircraft and helicopters, available this summer to fight fires in Portugal.
 
The unequivocal guarantee was given by Mourato Nunes to the Committee on Constitutional Affairs.

Suspended sentence handed out in dog cruelty case

justiceA 60-year-old dog breeder, who also is a farmer and a manager of an agricultural company, has received the heaviest sentence yet under Portugal’s 2014 pet protection laws.
 
The judge in Setúbal Court heard that the dogs found on the farm were ill, not properly fed, that they were all underweight and that they did not have sufficient clean water.

Praia da Luz - new pedestrian walkway to the EN125

roadworksLagos Council is launching a €1.3 million project to builkd a 1.85 metre wide pedestrian walk way at the side of the EM537 between Quatro Estradas on the EN125 and Praia da Luz.

The work is expected to start in the last quarter of 2018 and aims to sort out ‘existing anomalies’ in the pavement, as well as building proper drainage and installing low-energy lighting.

Zero files injunction to stop Tagus sludge dump

TejoFoamPortugal’s environmental association, Zero, is aghast at the government’s plan to dump sludge, to be dredged from the polluted  river bed of the Tagus, onto registered ecological land in a protected area.
 
The association of Portugal’s top environmental NGOs, filed its court injunction to stop the activities agreed by the Ministry of the Environment, under João Pedro Matos Fernandes.

Portimão cashes in by scrapping sports complex project

portimaoPortimão council is to resolve the planning issues surrounding the land at Barranco do Rodrigo, where a sports complex was to be built.

Plans for a football stadium, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a multipurpose sports hall and large commercial area have been scrapped and a much reduced building project for houses and green areas will be approved.

Further sardine ban announced after trawlers had left port

sardinesBunchWith many boats already on the high seas, heading for traditional sardine fishing grounds, the government shocked an already fragile industry by announcing an extension to the current ban that was meant to end at midnight on Tuesday.
 
No sardines may be caught and landed until May 20th. The stated reason is, "EU quota commitments made by Spain and Portugal."
