Lagos is one of the 100 best sustainable destinations in the world
The municipality of Lagos is among the top 100 best sustainable destinations in the world, according to the Green Destinations TOP 100 Stories award – 2023 edition.
This is a global competition for local and regional destinations that, within the scope of sustainability, aims to encourage destinations to tell their stories, share their experiences and successes, serving as a model and inspiration for other destinations.
“This competition offers an excellent first step for participants seeking recognition for their efforts in Sustainable Tourism, sharing and promoting stories that chronicle innovative and effective initiatives and projects from destinations working towards more sustainable development globally. Municipalities, islands, protected areas and other destinations committed to more sustainable tourism can apply for this award”, explains the municipality in a statement.
Lagos applied for the prize by telling about its good practice on the restoration of the Meia Praia dunes, with a story entitled: “Walking in Harmony – How Nature was Recovered and Valued.”
The list of the 100 best stories in the world by Green Destinations was revealed during the main annual event, the Green Destinations 2023 Conference , in Estonia, with Lagos joining this list, together with six other Portuguese destinations (namely, Alto Minho, Amarante, Braga, Castro Daire, Nazaré and Torres Vedras), which share and promote innovative and effective stories of initiatives and projects that work towards a more sustainable life globally.
This good practice in Lagos is in the TOP 6 of the Green Destinations Stories award, in the Nature and Scenery category.
Criteria such as quality, transferability, level of innovation in the stories and presence of all pillars of sustainability were considered in the selection.
The stories of each destination can be found on the Green Destinations TOP 100 2023 website and Lagos can be found here.
The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition has been running annually since 2014, celebrating and promoting 100 destinations and companies as inspiring examples of Sustainable Tourism for other destinations, tour operators and visitors.
The competition selects 100 Sustainable Tourism stories through an open call for proposals. Stories are judged in terms of effectiveness, innovation and transferability.
