'The Caramel Vineyard' is the third of Axel's books set in Portugal, inspired by his move to a small vineyard near Palmela three years ago, an area known for its sweet muscatel wines.
Following a career as a foreign correspondent, most recently as Reuters bureau chief in Portugal, Axel Georg Bugge has also co-authored two previous books - Lisbon Water Kills and The Cocaine Revenge.
This latest tale is of a deceitful husband who robs a treasure from his wife’s family on the eve of their marriage, setting off a mystery that changes everything on a venerable estate in one of Portugal’s main wine regions.
The Caramel Vineyard begins when Robin, a young man just out of university, takes a summer job on the estate and is immediately enchanted by both the place and his hostess, Catarina.
But the secrets of the past weigh on Catarina’s relationship with her husband, Dinis. They come to the surface at harvest time when Robin finds something valuable in the ground, beneath the grapevines.

About the Author
Axel was a foreign correspondent with Reuters in Portugal for 15 years, after previous postings in Denmark, England, Argentina, Brazil and Spain. He has reported from a total of twenty countries and interviewed a dozen heads of state and prime ministers. The Caramel Vineyard is his fifth book, and third one based in Portugal.
