On Sunday 11th November it was standing room only at the Remembrance Day service at St. Luke's Church Palhagueira, where more than 200 people honoured the memory of those who gave their lives for peace and freedom.
The exact minute marking the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice in 1918 was marked at St. Luke's by the Last Post, the two-minute silence and Reveille.
Wreaths were laid by the British Consul, Simona Demuro (on behalf of the British Ambassador); by Jacquie Collins, the Chairman of the Royal British Legion Portugal Branch; and by RSM Robert Collins, RMP (retired).
Father Reid Hamilton gave a thought-provoking sermon examining why we fought the two world wars, and many conflicts since, and the huge responsibility of governments when taking the decision to deploy armed forces. He stressed the need now for peace and reconciliation.
The Kohima Epitaph was spoken by Major (retired) Bill Bullock, "When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today."
