Twin sisters Kloe and Mariah, from the Algarve, are taking on a 30K charity run on 12 September 2026, to raise funds for the volunteer Bombeiros of Albufeira and Messines.
The run will take the sisters from Salir to Albufeira Bombeiros, and forms part of a fundraising initiative, Running For Our Heroes.
Last year, thanks to the incredible support of our community, the girls raised €5,000 for the Albufeira Bombeiros through a half marathon challenge. Since then, they have continued fundraising through community raffles, raising a further €1,000 for items needed in the Albufeira Bombeiros' mess room, and €1,500 this year to help provide water and other supplies for fire season.
The family moved from England to Portugal in 2018, after holidaying here for many years. After witnessing the devastating wildfires across Portugal, they realised that nearly 90% of the Bombeiros who protect the Algarve communities are volunteers — ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
"Their courage inspired us to act. What began as a single charity run in 2025 has grown into a movement to support the volunteer firefighters, who risk everything to keep us safe."
Kloe and Mariah are currently documenting the training journey and fundraising efforts through their website and social media pages, while also working towards becoming a registered charity.
"Now, as we work toward official non-profit status, we’re raising vital funds to help equip and support these everyday heroes — who risk their lives not for recognition or reward, but because they care."
