Kindness, generosity and the Christmas spirit were out in force at Almancil International Rotary Club’s Christmas Market held on Sunday December 6th. At Jardim das Comunidades in Almancil. Organised in collaboration with the Freguesia of Almancil, the event raised a grand total of 3,100 Euros.
The money is to be donated to the Associação Social e Cultural de Almancil (ASCA) and will be used to help fund a new crèche for children from birth to 6 months old and a kindergarten for children from the age of 6 months to 12 years.
“ASCA already provides facilities for the elderly and does so much excellent work in the community, we were delighted to make the organisation our chosen charity for this year’s Christmas Market,” said the President of the Rotary Club Uschi Kuhn. "We were overwhelmed with the support we received from so many people who turned up to help make the day a success. We even had a visit from Father Christmas who arrived on his motorbike this year giving Rudolph a rest!”
A total of 43 stalls participated selling traditional Portuguese and ethnic foods, antiques, bric-á-brac, hand-made goods, and much more.
Entertainment was provided throughout the day by Micelli, Vernon Delauney, the Salvation Army Band, Nigel the Music Man and Forever Young, a group of 5 girl singers whose ages range from 11 to 16. There was even folk singing and dancing provided by the Associação dos imigrantes Romenos e Moldavos Algarve (DOINA).
Students from Escola EB 2,3 Dr. António de Sousa Agostinho in Almancil spent the day cooking pancakes, and raised 54 Euros which they also donated to ASCA.
