Algarve residents Graham Hewitt and Ian West completed their crazy '1000 Minutes Bowls Marathon' succesfully on Wednesday morning. The two took part in order to raise money to buy specific items for Centro de Acolhimento Temporario Gente Pequena (A children´s residential home) in Vila Real de Santo Antonio.
The event took place at the Bowling Green on the Pedras de Rainha site in Cabanas, with Ian and Graham starting the marathon at 11:00am on Tuesday morning. They bowled for 50 minutes every hour, leaving ten minutes free for toilet breaks, refreshments and stretching exercises!
"We were very happy to see so many people through the night and early morning who turned up to play with us and stave off any boredom that could have set in. Not only did they turn up to play but they refused to stop even during the two heavy showers we received. Some brought food and hot drinks and one man even made us bacon and sausage sandwiches for breakfast. Truly selfless people."
Peter Harris, one of the club officials, has been organising `spiders´ (a one-bowl competition where all participants are positioned at the edges of the green all deliver a bowl towards a jack upon an agreed signal) when the tourist teams play and he has collected hundreds of euros too. The total now looks like it will exceed €1,000. Ian and Graham are in the process of liaising with the Children´s Home in Vila Real to find out what to buy that will benefit all the children there.
The pair completed their marathon of 1000 minutes bowling early on Wednesday morning - Graham had a hot shower, hit the sauna and then slept, Ian however was playing in the afternoon against a touring team! That man must be using Duracell batteries!!
