It is a basic human quality and involves learning to focus and pay wise attention to what’s going on inside your mind and body, and in the outside world.
Our minds are easily distracted, often unhelpfully going over past events in our head and trying to anticipate the future. Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to, and seeing more clearly whatever is happening in our lives. Paying attention to our thoughts, feelings and sensations in the body may not sound like a very helpful thing to do, but research consistently shows that learning to do this in a particular way can have a measurably positive impact on our lives.
Mindfulness will not eliminate life's pressures, but it can help each of us to respond in a calmer manner that benefits our heart, our body and our head. It helps us to recognise and step away from habitual, often unconscious emotional and physiological reactions to everyday events. To notice our typical reactions to life's events, and make better choices about how we respond. To feel more in control and have a greater sense of connection to our life.
In particular students often notice...
• Calmer mind with less thoughts
• Sleep better and going to sleep faster
• Worry less about future or past events
• Manage pain in a different way
Mindfulness is a practice, and provides us with a scientifically researched, systematic approach to cultivating clarity, insight and understanding.
We will be holding free Introduction/taster sessions for people to see what it is all about and to try it all out before booking the course. In the taster sessions, we explain how the concept of a Mindful Living Programme can be adopted by almost every person and what it entails. We also introduce the practical aspects of mindfulness meditation and you get a real opportunity to try it out and see how it feels for you.
These sessions will last for 2 hours and are on the 14th Feb, 28th Feb, 14th March and 28th March.
We will run the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course starting 4th April. This course consists of eight weekly sessions lasting 2 hours plus one further day with a session lasting 4 hours. This course is chargeable EU250 (early booking EU200).
The venue for both course and taster sessions is Monte na Luz retreat centre, a few km north of Loule. http://montenaluz.org
