Time to blossom

Painting by Julian RoweArtist Julian Rowe celebrates the arrival of spring portraying trees in blossom. Delicate flowers brushed into place using a generous impasto application of paint are sumptuous in their beauty.

His works of art seen at Galeria Côrte-Real in Paderne seem to blend with the surrounding countryside where mimosa trees, quince and hawthorn shrubs are beginning to bud and blossom. All across the Algarve in fields, gardens and along the waysides there are apricot, pomegranate, loquat and citrus trees responding to the warmth and sunshine.

Julian explains, “If a painting of mine gives a sense of being part of a story or scene, then I feel I have succeeded. If it gives a strong sense of atmosphere then again, that is what I’ve strived to do.”

After studying graphic design in the UK for four years Julian earned his living as a graphic artist. “But I missed the expression available to the fine artist. I decided to become a painter for real,” he says. Refining his style over the years, he has grown ever closer to the natural world.

Julian is a recent discovery to the owners of Côrte-Real who exhibit his paintings alongside sculptures, ceramics and other objet d’art. The gallery is situated in pretty countryside and signposted from Boliqueime, Ferreiras and Paderne.

The gallery is open Thursday to Sunday, 11am until 5pm.
