Al-Gharb Coffee Roasters, a specialty coffee roaster, based in Albufeira, Algarve, has received the “Best Challenge Roast” award at Porto Coffee Week - Best Coffee Roaster Competition.
The award recognises the excellence of Portuguese roasters, to create the best roast out of an undisclosed single origin coffee.
“We are incredibly honoured to receive the award, and passionate about bringing great quality coffee to the Algarve.” says Henning, Roast Master and co-founder at Al-Gharb Coffee Roasters.
The unknown coffee origin of the "Best Challenge Roast” has been revealed by the sponsoring Coffee Importer Belco. The beans that they selected were from El Salvador - Villa Galicia- with delicate fruity flavours of pineapple and sweetness of caramel and dark chocolate.

Al-Gharb Coffee Roasters was established in 2019, with the ambition of bringing traceable single sourced coffee to everyone. They have been part of a small group of artisanal micro-roasters who are paving the way with 3rd wave coffee, bringing high quality coffee to their ever growing customer market.
"We as roasters take all the care that the farmers have tended to their crop at the highest standard, picking only ripe coffee cherries. This is reflected in the green beans and we roast them to a specific profile in order to bring out the diverse flavours. A lot of specialty coffee is roasted lighter than traditional commercial roasters in order to keep these delicate flavours alive. Lighter roasts are usually used for filter coffees and darker roasts for espresso as it is the basis of many great drinks,” Henning adds.
Porto Coffee Week is one of the largest annual coffee festivals, bringing together all professionals and coffee lovers into one place. It is organised by https://tasteology.pt/ and sponsored by SAGE and Belco. It celebrates the best and latest of the coffee world.
