Megalithism in North Alentejo - lectures in English by Professor Jorge de Oliveira - Dec 3rdOn Tuesday 3rd December, the Algarve Archaeological Association (AAA) will be presenting two lectures, in English, by Professor Jorge de Oliveira. The first lecture will be at 2.30pm at the Museu do Traje in São Bras de Alportel, the second lecture will be at 6pm at the Convento de São José in Lagoa.

Menir da Meada Pôr do SolIn this lecture, Prof. Jorge de Oliveira will present the current state of knowledge about megalithic monuments in northern Alentejo. He will be talking about the documented testimonies from the first references in the 18th century to the present, as well as the archaeological investigations that have taken place. An attempt is made to understand the relationship between the megalithization of the landscape and the natural resources necessary for the first agricultural communities. In addition, Prof. Jorge will explain the Megalithic artistic expressions and the recent dating of menhirs in northern Alentejo and their relationship with funerary structures. He will also present an overview of the knowledge of the monumental and artistic manifestations of the first agricultural communities around the Serra de São Mamede in the Portalegre District of Portugal.

Prof. Jorge de Oliveira is Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at the University of Évora and Director of the Marvão Municipal Museum. In the last 44 years he has taught various Archaeology subjects, including Masters and Doctorate degrees at the University of Évora. There, he directed the Archaeology laboratory and the programmes of Masters and PhD in Archaeology. His research focused on the study of the first agricultural communities in North Alentejo and, in particular, on their monumental and artistic expressions. Prof. Jorge de Oliveira is the author of more than 380 publications distributed in books, articles, book chapters and conference proceedings. Born in Marvão, he began archaeological work at the age of 13. In 1980, he graduated in History at the University of Lisbon. In 1995 he got his PhD in Archaeology at the University of Évora, with the thesis "Megalithic Monuments of the Sever River Basin". In parallel with his focus on Megalithism, he did research on Jewish Archaeology, Archaeology of the Death Penalty and, for 12 years, was director of the excavations at the Roman City of Ammaia.

Non-members are welcome to attend AAA lectures for a 5-euro admission fee, with all money raised by the AAA being used for archaeological grants and speakers.
