Portuguese politics of the last century - a talk by Peter Booker

Portuguese politics of the last century - a talk by Peter BookerAlgarve History Association's presentation on Tuesday 17th December and Friday 20th December covers Portuguese politics of the last century.

First, the abolition of the monarchy and the difficulties faced by the First Republic, and the reason for the rise of the Estado Novo.  The crisis of the century was the Carnation Revolution of 1974, and the almost bloodless move from a Right-wing dictatorship to a participative social democracy.

How did Portugal achieve that change, and what were the dangers that it faced?

What was the role of the armed forces, and how did they transfer power to a civilian government?

Was there any danger that Portugal would become a Communist state within the NATO alliance?

How has the democratic state evolved since 1974?

Peter Booker will present this subject on Tuesday 17 December at 18:00 in the Municipal Library in Lagoa; and on Friday 20 December at 11:00 in the Municipal Library in Tavira.

Attendance is open to all and there is no charge.
