A new comedy play performed by an international group of ‘Random Players’ tells the intriguing story of Portugal’s last king and his passion for a glamorous French actress.
Exiled from Portugal and living in London there are dramatic consequences when the amorous couple encounter the ex-king’s disapproving relative, the English Queen Mary of Teck.
Performed as an afternoon matinee at the restaurant Quinta da Borboleta, the audience is served afternoon tea as they are introduced to other famous characters of the time; the purveyor of modern movement Isadora Duncan, the Russian prima-ballerina Anna Pavlova, the suffragette Christabel Pankhurst and the promiscuous Harry Selfridge.
Musical entertainment is provided by Selfridge’s Orchestra accompanying catwalk models in a fashion show, the extravagant dancing of Isadora Duncan and popular songs from the 1910’s including “Where did you get that hat?” and “I’m forever bowing bubbles”.
Woven into the story is the contested ownership of the notorious Cambridge Emeralds that currently form part of royal jewel collection. Based on fact ‘Royal Tea’ is written in rhyme and directed by Carolyn Kain.
