Ghostly Goings On in The Algarveans’ Forthcoming Production

Ghostly Goings On in The Algarveans’ Forthcoming ProductionThe Christmas ornaments had barely been packed away before The Algarveans were back into rehearsal for their forthcoming contribution to Lagoa’s Humorfest.

This amateur theatre group return to the stage with a production of Blithe Spirit, the timeless comedy written by the master of acerbic wit, Noël Coward.Noel Coward

Many theatre goers and film lovers will be familiar with this beloved 1940s classic, but for those who aren’t, the play concerns the fussy and cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, remarried but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira, called up during a séance by eccentric medium, Madame Arcati. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles’ marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who can neither see nor hear the ghost, the consequences of which are both comic and disastrous until Elvira is not the only blithe spirit to haunt Charles.

The smash hit comedy of the London and Broadway stages, this much revived classic is directed for The Algarveans by Frank Remiatte, a seasoned actor and director who has appeared several times on stage with the group. Frank is keen to retain the period character of the play in both set and costume design, thus providing the perfect backdrop for the witty repartee characteristic of Coward. Although the play debuted over eighty years ago, it remains a timeless piece that has lost none of its charm.

Blithe Spirit is playing at the Carlos do Carmo Auditorium, Lagoa on March 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30 pm.
