In The Pink is delighted to present “Colourama”, an exhibition bringing together the work of Johnny Mae Hauser and Teresa Freitas, two artists whose distinct visual languages are united by a profound sensitivity to color.
Opening on April 10, 2025, this exhibition offers an immersive journey through their individual yet complementary perspectives, with Freitas’s work exhibited on the ground floor and Hauser’s on the first floor of the gallery.
On the first floor, Dutch-German artist Johnny Mae Hauser presents photographs from her “Bildnis” series, in her first exhibition in Portugal. Born in 1997 in Amsterdam, Hauser’s photographic practice is deeply introspective, exploring the intangible dimensions of human emotion through a palette of soft, cool tones. Her images capture moments of stillness and introspection, forging a visual dialogue between artist and viewer that is both personal and universally resonant.
“Bildnis” is a series of abstract self-portraits that delve into the connection between emotional memory and everyday objects. Conceived in London in 2021 during a period of personal transition, the series emerged from Hauser’s sense of invisibility, transforming into an exploration of the ineffable through blurred, painterly still-life compositions. By rejecting the sharpness of traditional photography, Hauser invites the audience to engage with what lies beyond visibility—where memory, perception, and reality merge.
A signature aspect of Hauser’s practice is her approach to printing and presentation. She favours C-Print techniques, which lend a delicate materiality to her images, and deliberately avoids frames or glass, allowing her photographs to remain exposed and unfiltered—heightening their raw emotional impact.
Portuguese photographer Teresa Freitas is known for her masterful manipulation of colour and light, creating images that exist in a poetic dreamscape between the natural and the artificial. Through her “Cinematica” series, Freitas blurs the boundaries between digital aesthetics and nostalgia, often characterised by soft pastel hues and a signature cotton-candy pink palette. However, in this exhibition, visitors will also encounter a striking vibrancy of green.
Freitas’s approach is that of a modern-day flâneur, wandering through bustling cityscapes and tranquil natural environments alike, translating their essence into compositions that feel both intimate and universal. With a keen awareness of contemporary aesthetics, her photographs balance digital culture with a deeply human touch, offering an alternative reality—one that is surreal yet familiar, like stepping into a world of heightened perception. Her work invites viewers to reconsider their surroundings and recognise the interplay between colour, structure, and emotion in everyday life.
“Colourama” is an invitation to experience photography beyond documentation, where colour becomes an active force in shaping perception and emotion. Both Freitas and Hauser push the boundaries of traditional photographic representation, using their unique palettes to challenge how we see and feel the world around us.
The exhibition opens to the public on April 10, 2025, at In The Pink gallery, Loulé, Portugal.
