If you're here in the Algarve this weekend, you'd feel the city of Faro change gears. Quarteira-born Dino D'Santiago comes home Saturday night to open the MOCHILA Festival, the University throws its first ever Queima das Fitas at Estádio do Algarve, and over in Tavira the Spirit of the Dance tour lands for one night only. Three things in three towns, all on Saturday May 2.
Friday is Labour Day, Portugal's first long weekend of the year and in the inland villages you'll see what's left of the old custom: bunches of yellow giestas tucked into doorframes against bad luck. 22°C, beaches still empty, the wildflowers at full tilt. A long weekend with no excuse to stay in.

- 39th Algarve Academic Week — opening night — Penha campus, Faro, evening — First night of student concerts. Public welcome.
- MOCHILA Theatre Festival opens — Teatro das Figuras and various venues, Faro — Day 1 of ten days of theatre, dance, circus and music for all ages.
- Alte Cultural Week — closing weekend — Alte village, Loulé — Last days of fado, accordion, folklore, traditional games.

- Gate 57 — Convento de São José, Lagoa, evening — Memory-and-music piece.
OUTDOOR AND TRADITION
- Sardinhada at Odeleite — Castro Marim mountains, from noon — Traditional Labour Day sardine grill in the village square.

- Mercado de Loulé (covered market) — Loulé centre, 07:00–15:00 — The Algarve's iconic market hall. Spring vegetables, the year's first cherries, fresh fish.

- 39th Academic Week — Bênção das Pastas + Queima das Fitas — Estádio do Algarve, Faro, 14:00 (blessing) and 15:30 (burning of ribbons) — The historic first.

- Anniversary Concert — Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio — Lagos, evening — The Lagos philharmonic society named for May 1 plays its anniversary concert. Wind, percussion, fado and Portuguese guitar.
- Ella and More — Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve — Auditório Carlos do Carmo, Lagoa — Ella Fitzgerald tribute by Sara Miguel, one of Portugal's finest contemporary jazz voices.

- Spirit of the Dance, 25th Anniversary — Cine-Teatro, Tavira, evening.
- Ponto Zero — Contemporary Circus — Lagos — Six-state physical-theatre piece on collapse and reconstruction. Weekend run.
